Android Phones for Kids
Smartphones give you a little more information regarding where your kids are and what they’re doing, but they also give your kid some freedom to have a little fun or get in some trouble. The mark of a good kids’ smartphone is one that’s often cheap, yet capable. Here are some of the best devices you can get for your kids.
- Perfect balance: Moto G7
- Pen pal: LG Stylo 5
- Insanely cheap: Moto E5 Play
- First phone: Alcatel 1X
- Ace student: Nokia 7.1
- Endless battery: Moto G7 Power
- Spoil them: Google Pixel 3a
- Made for tiny hands: Palm Phone
- For beginners: Dyno Smartwatch
The Moto G7 is outfitted with just about everything you could ask for in a modern smartphone. The 6.2-inch Full HD display looks fantastic for research and super educational YouTube videos, there’s a small waterdrop notch for the selfie camera, and the Snapdragon 632 processor is snappy for day-to-day tasks.
The LG Stylo 5 is one of the most compelling budget options on the market, and its marquee features happen to be perfect for children. Its included stylus will allow your kid to draw or take notes, and that FullView display will be perfect for all the videos, apps, and games they need. Oh, and it’ll be great for homework, of course.
The Moto E5 Play packs all the essentials a smartphone needs for a very reasonable asking price. It won’t be playing some of the most demanding content Google Play has to offer, but it should be able to handle all the 2D-based kids’ apps and games available, and that makes it perfect for younger children.
Cheap enough to be their first phone, the Alcatel 1X has everything it needs to help you keep in touch with your kids’ needs while they’re away. It features Android Oreo Go Edition, a lightweight version of the OS that maximizes memory usage. Best yet, you can drop less than a Benjamin and walk away with this one.
If you want to award the straight-A student in your family, the Nokia 7.1 is the phone to do it with. With dual cameras, 5.84-inch 19:9 aspect ratio display, Snapdragon 636 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C and a fingerprint sensor, it has everything a kid could ask for. And because it’s Android One, you’ll get fast updates straight from Google.
Want to make sure you can reach your kid at all times but worry about them killing their phone’s battery? Pick up the Moto G7 Power. Outfitted with a massive 5,000 mAh battery, Motorola says you can expect up to three days of use on just one charge. The Power also has a snappy octa-core processor and fast charging!
This is a lot of money to spend on a phone for your kid, but there’s an argument to be made for getting them a Pixel 3a. Google’s custom version of Android is clean and easy to use, the camera is better than anything else on this list by a long shot, and the 3a is first in line for regular software updates and security patches. In other words, it’ll keep on working for a while to come.
We wouldn’t recommend the Palm Phone to most people, but if you’re on Verizon, it might just be the perfect smartphone for your kiddo. It has a super tiny display that measures in at just 3.3-inches, has an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, and runs a very simplified version of Android Oreo.
Okay, so the Dyno Smartwatch isn’t a phone, but it’s a great stepping stone for kids just getting into that world. It offers contact to parents and trusted contacts thanks to a dedicated SIM card slot, and the smartphone companion app allows parents to remotely track their children by GPS.
Get the phone that’s right for your kid
Everyone’s kid (and budget) is different, meaning there’s not one single phone we recommend to absolutely everyone, but there are a couple things most people would look for in a phone for kids. Generally you want a phone that’s cheap, capable, and most importantly, one that fits your child’s needs.
That said, the Moto G7 is the best overall option thanks to its great feature-to-price ratio. It has a capable processor, solid battery life, good software, and plenty more for just a little over $200. Your kids are bound to love it, and perhaps more importantly, so will your wallet.
If that’s still a bit more cash that you’re willing to part with, you can’t go wrong with the Moto E5 Play or Alcatel 1X. While not as flashy or powerful as the Moto G6, these phones offer a good, basic experience that’ll keep your kids connected with the core features they need.
